Sibling Sexual Trauma & Abuse Conference: Breaking the Silence

Why this conference?

Sibling Sexual Trauma & Abuse: Breaking the Silence

will be the first in-person conference in the US to focus specifically on Sibling Sexual Trauma and Abuse (SSTA), a form of child sexual abuse that is surprisingly common, yet critically under- recognized.

Goals of the conference are to help survivors heal, help families cope, enhance professional skills and knowledge, and advocate for effective prevention and intervention.

Facts About SSTA: A Silent Epidemic
  • SSTA is believed to be one of the most common forms of child sexual abuse, yet the most hidden.

  • 5WAVES estimates that 2-5% of children are traumatized by a sibling’s sexual behavior - an average of one child in every classroom of 25.

  • In half of all cases, the sexual harm begins before a child’s 8th birthday and lasts more than 5 years.

  • SSTA is a lasting, life-changing trauma, affecting the entire family.

  • Nine out of 10 children who are sexually harmed by a sibling don’t tell anyone about it until adulthood, if they tell at all.

Through sharing our voices we will Break the Silence, bringing prevention, intervention, and healing!

Conference Values

5WAVES expects that those who join with us to make SSTA: Breaking the Silence are aligned with our conference values. Before committing to sponsor, we ask that you read our values statement below, with particular attention to the first two bullets: Inclusive and Trauma-Aware.
  • Inclusive: Those with connection to SSTA [1] will be welcomed and supported while participating in planning and attendance, including those in historically and commonly marginalized groups (such as Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other people of color, LGBTQIA+, those who are neurodiverse, and people with disabilities).

  • Trauma-Aware: Our spaces, processes, language, and attitude will reflect a deep understanding of trauma and the many ways it may be reverberating in the lives of those who plan, lead, and attend the conference.

  • Lived-Experience-Centered: We value and will amplify the voices of those with lived experience of SSTA (e.g., survivors, parents, partners of survivors).

  • Research-Informed: We value sound research, which provides empirical evidence to inform effective prevention, intervention, and healing responses to SSTA.

  • Encouraging: Our messages will reflect the true reality of SSTA, while also pointing toward the possibility for restoration, healing, and hope.

  • Respect Individual Agency: We will provide information for individuals to make their own decisions regarding each unique experience of SSTA, including choices regarding justice, healing, and family relationships.

  • Respect Individual Privacy: We will prioritize privacy and confidentiality of personal images and stories throughout the conference. [2]

  • Simple and Affordable: In order to keep costs low and respect the time required of our volunteer planning team, we will strive to identify what needs to be done to provide a conference that aligns with our values and fulfills our mission, and focus on doing those things well.

[1] We will not have any specific space or group at this event for people who have sexually harmed a sibling. We expect that there will be presenters, practitioners, and parents who are supporting those who caused harm as a child or young person. There also may be people who are not yet clear about how much responsibility they bear, or those who were harmed but also harmed someone else. We cannot guarantee that no one who attends has ever caused sexual harm. We do expect those who have caused sexual harm to obtain consent from the sibling they harmed and consent from 5WAVES, Inc, before registering. And, to consider refraining from attending, to respect the needs of the many survivors who will be in attendance.

[2]  We will hold our attendees to the expectation that they must get consent of all, including those nearby or in the background, before taking or sharing any images, videos, or voice recordings. We will issue reminders that personal stories that are shared during the conference must remain confidential. We will offer the opportunity to share and present anonymously, or using an icon or pseudonym.
